Hello guys,

I'm trying to write a script on a virtual machine which does some job on the host ESXI by running vmware-cmd. the scripts works inside Virtual Machine by doing a ssh to the host ESXI ..

the script can run on any virtual machine and I need to  find a method to retrieve the ip address for ESXI host from virtual machine  ... is there any way to get this ip address through virtual machine ??

thanks,

sangamesh

Hi.

Im having trouble adding my HP MSA2000fc storage in VMware.

The LUN has been mapped to LUN101 and i VMware the HBA finds the LUN (Because im troubleshooting im only using 1 cable directly from HBA to MSA controller)

2.jpg

As you can see, the LUN is found.

Then i try and add it as VMFS-5 and get this error

1.jpg

Afterwards i check the patition and it is what it shows:

~ # partedUtil getptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.600c0ff000da0c4b0c85395301000000

unknown

218606 255 63 3511912704

I've also tried mklabel with gpt and get this error.

~ # partedUtil mklabel /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.600c0ff000da0c4b0c85395301000000

gpt

Error: Connection timed out during write on /dev/disks/naa.600c0ff000da0c4b0c85395301000000

WriteNewPtable: Unable to commit to device /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.600c0ff000da0c4b0c85395301000000

msdos works, but im still not able to mount it in VMware

~ # partedUtil mklabel /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.600c0ff000da0c4b0c85395301000000

msdos

~ # partedUtil getptbl /vmfs/devices/disks/naa.600c0ff000da0c4b0c85395301000000

msdos

218606 255 63 3511912704

And some logs!

~ # tail -f /var/log/hostd.log

On the MSA i've done a "restore defaults factory" and afterwards configured it as basic as possible.

LUN 101 read/write. (There is not much to chance in the webinterface).

I've done a 4 disk RAID5 and 12 disk RAID6, just to be sure the disks were wiped.

Any suggestions?

How to get View pool desktop status

Hello All,

I am looking for a PowerCLI script where I can define my pool name then get a total count of the status of the desktops in that pool.  I have tried several searches that have led me no where, ideally the script would output to a csv file like so...

Number of Desktops "Available" = 6

Number of Desktops "Connected" = 1

Number of Desktops "Agent Unreachable" = 1

Number of Desktops "Error" = 1

Number of Desktops "Other" = 1

The purpose of this script is when I run my weekly scheduled scripts to refresh a pool(s) I would like to kick off a final script that reports at completion with the above mentioned output.  Can some one please help me from getting any more gray hair?

Thank you

(Will award points for helpful information)

iSCSI- rescan takes longer time and i/o latency is very high

Hi There,

We have two servers with ESXi 5.1 installed. Each server has 2 NICs.

Two iSCSI LUNs are exported from Solaris OS to two ESXi servers. The Solaris system has 4 NIC.

NICs are connected as follows.

----------------------------------------------------------

Solaris         ----       ESXi 5.1

------------------------------------------------------------

10.7.0.11/16   ------ Node1-10.7.0.12/16

10.8.0.11/16   ------ Node1- 10.8.0.12/16

10.9.0.11/16   ------ Node2- 10.9.0.12/16

10.10.0.11/16  ------Node2- 10.10.0.12/16

Each ESXi server sees two paths (one is active and another is standby). MTU is set to 9000 on all the NICs.

iSCSI port binding is enabled on each esxi servers.

What we observed is that, sometimes the rescan takes longer time and  i/o latency  of the LUN are very high. Could you please help to solve this issue?

VLAN

Hi,

first of all, sorry is this isn't the correct forum.

In my office there are some VLAN (one VLAN for each floor). My VmWare hosts are in one of them and all my VM have IP's that are inside of one VLAN, but now I want that a new VM has one IP from another VLAN because some workstation have to access to this new IP.

How can I do to this new VM has a IP from one VLAN?

Thanks

Server mirroring and disaster recovery using vmware

$

Greetings:

I currently have 11 Physical servers that hosts 23 Virtual servers.  We are using Hypervisor but planning to move away to Vmware to achieve the following  -

(1) Server mirroring -  Setup a secondary location with a fiber link (less than a mile away) and have identical Physical/virtual servers

Both primary and secondary locations are on the same subnet.  If a server in primary location fails, Vmware should sense it and then bring up the mirror server to take over.

Currently we have Direct Attached Storage on the servers, we are exploring the SAN option

Option 1:

Primary location -  Server with DAS    /  Secondary location - identical servers with DAS.   The data partition from primary location is sync'd to data partition of the secondary location (on each servers)

Option 2:

Primary location - Servers with SAN / Secondary location - identical server  NO SAN. Secondary servers will connect to the SAN in primary location through the fiber link.  It is a shared pipe - the performance will be lower than the servers running from primary location

Option 3:

Primary location - Servers with SAN / Secondary location - identical servers with SAN.  Primary SAN is sync'd to secondary SAN.  When a primary location server fails and secondary location server starts and run off the secondary location SAN  -  added complexity in managing the sync?.

[ Another option is - use the secondary SAN only on a total facility loss of the primary location, but for single server loss, use it as in option 2 ]

What is the Vmware product(s) that will let me achieve this goal ?

Thanks

Script error when trying to install VMware Player on Windows 8 Laptop

I have downloaded version 6.01 of VMware Player onto the Desktop of my Windows 8 laptop but everytime I try to install it I get the following error...

An error has occurred in the script on this page

Line:   1089

Char:   7

Error:   Expected ')'

Code:   0

URL:  file:///C:/Users/DG's/AppData/Local/Temp/vmware_1387286925/index.htm?lang=1033&locale=1033

Do you want to continue running scripts on this page?

Yes/No

I have followed the Knowledgebase article advising me to clear out my browsing history and cache and try downloading again but nothing changes.

If I click Yes or No the install window goes blank and my Laptops fan starts running but nothing appears to be happening. If I try to abort the installation by right clicking the VM taskbar icon I get a message telling me an installation is in progress and to wait until this finishes...I have waited over an hour and the nearest I have got to an installation is an empty VMware Folder in My Documents.

Can anyone help me please.

vCO error 'Unable to execute action 'cloneVM'

$

I have been working on a small test lab and need some assistance resolving what looks like a permissions issue. I am running the VC appliance 5.5, a single 5.1 host and vco 5.5.  SSO is configured with Active directory as a LDAP server and appears to work as I can sign in to VC and vcO using my AD Domain admin creds. In AD I created a test user called builder, and domain groups as follows: VCO Builders – builders account VCO Admins – my account Domain admin – my account In VC these 3 groups are all set to 'administrators' at the root level. In the SSO administrators group I added VCO Admins and Domain admins. I added the VCO Builders group to the SSO SolutionUsers group I think the issue is related to how this groups permissions map into VC. I have tried to make the user a domain admin, but that did not resolve it. I have been working through this workflow http://www.vcoteam.info/articles/learn-vco/54-create-a-simple-vco-self-service-vm-provisioning-portal-part-1.html. When I run the workflow with my AD account it all works.  When I run it as builder, it fails after I answer the approval question.  The error is ‘Unable to execute action 'cloneVM', you have no 'execution' rights’ What am I missing?

Static IP given during OVA deployment doesnt take effect post deployment

$

Hi Everyone,

I was trying to deploy a VM using the ovftool, I thought I would use the properties which are thrown from a "probe" of the OVA file.

ovftool http://server/files/builds/vpas/6.0.0/latest/vPAS-installer.ova

Properties:

  ClassId:     vami

  Key:         gateway

  InstanceId   vPAS

  Category:    Networking Properties

  Label:       Default Gateway

  Type:        string

Description: The default gateway address for this VM. Leave blank if DHCP is

               desired.

  ClassId:     vami

  Key:         DNS

  InstanceId   vPAS

  Category:    Networking Properties

  Label:       DNS

  Type:        string

Description: The domain name servers for this VM (comma separated). Leave

               blank if DHCP is desired.

  ClassId:     vami

  Key:         ip0

  InstanceId   vPAS

  Category:    Networking Properties

  Label:       Network 1 IP Address

  Type:        string

Description: The IP address for this interface. Leave blank if DHCP is

               desired.

  ClassId:     vami

  Key:         netmask0

  InstanceId   vPAS

  Category:    Networking Properties

  Label:       Network 1 Netmask

  Type:        string

After having made sure that such properties exists from the probe, I tried to use them to give the VM a static IP post deployment, automatically.

ovftool --datastore="31_datastore" --acceptAllEulas --ipAllocationPolicy=fixedPolicy --name="vPAS_31_1" --powerOn --prop:ip0="172.16.121.115" --prop:netmask0="255.255.0.0" --prop:DNS="172.16.1.10" --prop:gateway="172.16.1.1" http://server/vpas/6.0.0/latest/vPAS-installer.ova vi://root:password@172.16.121.31/

Opening OVA source: http://server/files/builds/vpas/6.0.0/latest/vPAS-installer.ova

The manifest validates

Opening VI target: vi://root@172.16.121.31:443/

Deploying to VI: vi://root@172.16.121.31:443/

Transfer Completed

Powering on VM: vPAS_31_1

Warning:

- OVF property with key: 'DNS' does not exists.

- OVF property with key: 'gateway' does not exists.

- OVF property with key: 'ip0' does not exists.

Can someone please explain me whether this is a common problem ( from VMware ) or something I am doing wrong?

Thanks,

Shared Folders in Fusion slower than in Parallels -- any advice?

$

I was a mostly satisfied user of Parallels (version 2.5) but I bought the early bird special license for Fusion and have been trying it out the past few days.

One thing I was disappointed with in Parallels was the speed at which file reads and writes from a shared folder happened. I keep my subversion check-out for a company project on my Mac file system and some of the files are Windows-only binaries -- discrete event simulation files for the product Extend.

With Parallels, it was slow but usable to double click a file in a shared folder and have the Windows app open it. With Fusion I seem to have to wait 3 or 4 times as long for a double click  to have the app open the file. The file is a 15 meg file so that is a factor. But Parallels could handle files of this size.

If I copy the file to my virtual disk, and double click the copy, things are very speedy but I want to keep my files where my Mac subversion client can access them.

Is this common experience -- really slow shared folders?

Any advice to speed things up? I tried to use Windows file sharing from my Mac rather than Fusion shared folders and it was no better -- might have even been worse. Mapping the share to a drive doesn't help.

Maybe this can be improved in the next Fusion release.

Is there a way to specify static IP for a deploying OVA in the ovftool command?

Hi,

I am trying to deploy OVA using ovftool. I see the option --network and --net available for selecting the network by name, though I was not able to find a way to assign a static IP in the ovftool command itself. Something like --ip0=10.10.10.10. Is there a way we can do this? From UI when we deploy an OVA, we have provision to provide IP, Gateway, Netmask and DNS.

Thanks

Changing Input parameter to Attribute removes binding in 5.5

Hi All,

When I change an already bound Input variable to a parameter in 5.5, it seems to unbind it(and I need to re-bind to the parameter.). This was not the case in 5.1. Is there a way to revert this behavior to 5.1 style.

vCO loses ability to connect to mssql database after reboot

$

Hi vCO Experts,

We configured a (working!) vCO appliance with MSSQL Server as the database. After rebooting the appliance, the licensing manager appears to throw an error - first we look for configuration under /var/lib/vco/app-server/temp/dars/o11nplugin-vsphere.dar/resources/licenses, then get a SQLException from the database looking for licenses!

Here's the start of the exception:

2014-04-04 14:31:58.426-0400 [Loading : o11nplugin-vsphere.dar] DEBUG {} [PluginConfigurationElement] No Valid License available in /var/lib/vco/app-server/temp/dars/o11nplugin-vsphere.dar/resources/licenses

2014-04-04 14:31:58.567-0400 [http-bio-142.42.194.85-8281-exec-5] ERROR {} [Config_KeyStore] getKeystoreManager() -->

java.sql.SQLException: Network error IOException: Connection refused

at net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.ConnectionJDBC2.<init>(ConnectionJDBC2.java:410)

at net.sourceforge.jtds.jdbc.ConnectionJDBC3.<init>(ConnectionJDBC3.java:50)

[continued grumbling]

Under the configuration UI, under "database", we see that the database installation is marked "up to date", but the error received when attempting to connect is:

Cannot connect to jdbc:jtds:sqlserver://<servername>:1433/<databasename>;domain=<domain>;instance=<instancename>. Network error IOException: Connection refused

Has anybody else seen this before? I'm at my wits end trying to troubleshoot this. Is my database corrupt (can't read from database as part of the getKeystoreManager() function?), is my vCO corrupt (can't read from /var/lib/vco/app-server/temp/dars/o11nplugin-vsphere.dar/resources/licenses?)

Keep in mind that this database was working before, so my configuration parameters on the database should not have changed. Added onto this, I'm able to make a connection to this database from a network-adjacent machine, and the database is on the same network as the vCO appliance (so, no firewall changes). For your information, we connect using Windows Authentication, to the database server's fqdn over port 1433, using a specified instance and database name. The domain is specified as <domain>.com as per the installation instructions. All of these things worked before, it broke upon rebooting the vCO appliance after experiencing directory issues (resolved after the reboot). vCO is 5.5.0 build 1281930, with plugins installed from the vCAC-embedded vCO (including the vCenter plugin).

Anything you can do to help would be spectacular.

Any ideas you have would be a great help.

Error when loading license library?

$

0

Hi guru,

I received an error when I provided a valid license to view connection server.

In the "Edit license" window, I input a valid license, but got an error message saying "Error when loading license library". (The original error message is in Chinese and I translated it to English so I'm not sure the words are exactly the same as in English version.)

It looks something wrong before the connection server verify the licesen. If the license is really invalid, the error message should be like "The license is invalid" instead of "Error when loading license library". I got the "invalid license" error before but never met the "loading error" message.

Any suggestion? Thanks!
