Extending current datastore

Hi,

I am running out of space and adding additional hard disks to the server to create a second LUN.

My concern, is there any risk of losing current data on the existing datastore while proceeding with the "increase Datastore Capacity" procedure.

ESXi 6.5 Shared Storage between 2 Guests

$

I have an ESXi 6.5 host with 2 guests (Windows 10 and Ubuntu). This is my first time using ESXi. The host has 2 storage devices (an SSD and a HDD), datastore1 is the SSD and datastore2 is the HDD. The guests are running on datastore1 and datastore2 is currently empty. Is it possible to setup something on datastore2 so that both guests can access it simultaneously?

I know I could create a vmdk and attach it to one of the guests then set up a network share on that guest so that the other guest could access it. But I was hoping to avoid that in case there is a time where the source of the share is offline.

I found a few guides that said to add a new SCSI controller to both (LSI Logic SAS) then create a new hard disk on one guest and set up Multi-Writer sharing. When I followed the steps I was able to get the drive to show up in both guests but they are not synced. If I add a file in one guest its not there in the other. They are using the same vmdk file.

Shared folders not refreshing

Hello,

Here is the issue I am having and I hope someone can provide some insight. I have VMware Workstation 12 Pro installed on a ThinkPad with Windows 10 Pro as the host OS. The VM has Windows 7 Ultimate installed.

My issue is with shared folder content. If I open a file via Windows Explorer on my host machine and make changes to it, when I save and close it the timestamp reflects that changes have been made. If I open the same file via Windows Explorer in the VM and make some more changes, when I save and close it the timestamp remains the same, regardless of how long I wait. This is a simple explanation of what is happening. That being said, I think this issue is also impacting our development environment. Files that should refresh automatically for debug are not doing so after changes are made. Any insights as to what may be happening and a solution or workaround would be great.

Let me know if additional information is needed. Thanks in advance!

I'm not able to get the workstation client application to connect to the local shared VMs.

I found that vmware-hostd is crashing, apparently somewhere in the PAM stack.

This had been working fine with Workstation 12 prior to the upgrade.

The VMs that are set to auto-start, are running, BTW and I can connect to vSphere using the workstation client, but not locally.

VSAN SIzing

Any one done VSAN sizing from the new VSAN Sizing tool.  ?? I have couple of clarifications.  The total CPU Core requirements was 100 Cores , I have selected 32 core/per server without doing any FTT=1 /5 calculation it would required minimum 4 Hosts. However the total hardware requirements itself its coming 4 Hosts including 1 host failure.  Can any one suggest me??

vsphere client and web client show different inventory objects

hi everyone, im using vsphere 5.5 , with vmware vcenter appliance, database and sso embedded

im working this days in give permission to perform certain operations to some users in a active directory's group.

im having issues testing permission, when i delete a user from the group that have the permission, if the user acess the web client the permission is deleted, but if i access by vmware vsphere client, (the old thick client) the permission stays for ever!

the only way to "refresh" the permission in the thick client, is to restart the vcenter service.

the curious thing is, if i add a single active directory user permission directly in the resource pool, and then delete the user permission, it perfectly reflected in both web and thick client.

any idea is welcome.

thank you and sorry my english.

Re: vCenter 6 and smart card authentication / not prompting for certificate (web client)

I am searching for the same answer.  I am stuck with the error, "Make sure the smart card is inserted properly.  Close your browser window then retry."

WebClientInsertedProperlyRedact.png

I have done the same steps as the Original Poster except that I have not replaced my SSL and user certificates with trusted ones.  I therefore get untrusted certificate warnings before I log in.

I did do the following two steps in order to progress my issue slightly:

- Added my vCenter Server FQDN to the Local Internet sites and Trusted Sites (through Group Policy).

- Installed the Client Integration Plugin

I can log in with Smart Card authentication if I select "Use Windows Session Authentication."  However, I have multiple certificates and do not want to use my Windows session certificate to administer the vCenter Server.   The vSphere Web Client does not prompt me for certificates, so I cannot switch to my other certificate.  Likewise, I do not want to login to Windows and/or open Internet Explorer with my Administrator certificate.  These are not security best business practices; and boy does my organization like their best business practices.

Smart Card certificates work fine for all other websites and applications.

This is the script found here: VMware Knowledge Base

I want to execute this without running on ALL VMs. How would i add a " Get-Content $ChangeMonitorcontrol | ForEach-Object " to the script below pointing it to a txt file of VM names?

ForEach ($vm in (Get-VM)){

$vmv = Get-VM $vm | Get-View

$name = $vmv.Name

$guestid = $vmv.Summary.Config.GuestId

$vmx = New-Object VMware.Vim.VirtualMachineConfigSpec

$vmx.extraConfig += New-Object VMware.Vim.OptionValue

$vmx.extraConfig[0].key = "monitor_control.enable_softResetClearTSC"

$vmx.extraConfig[0].value = "TRUE"

if ($guestid -like "windows8*Guest") {

($vmv).ReconfigVM_Task($vmx)
}

}

Adding IPs to Authentication Proxy on vCenter Appliance

$

Based on the DOCs for deploying a AP you need to manually add the IP addresses for ESXi hosts allowed to use the proxy:

Using vSphere Authentication Proxy

You can set up other hosts to use vSphere Authentication proxy if you want to make it possible for the host to join the domain without using Active Directory credentials. That means you do not need to transmit Active Directory credentials to the host, and you do not save Active Directory credentials in the host profile.

In that case, you add the host's IP address to the vSphere Authentication Proxy access control list, and vSphere Authentication Proxy authorizes the host based on its IP address by default. You can enable client authentication to have vSphere Authentication Proxy check the host's certificate.

However for the life of me I can't find out how do to that on the Appliance. I've checked the UI (Flash and HTML5), the shell and the service config but there's nothing with regards to adding these IPs. All this has been done as the SSO admin as well. Whatever info I can find pertains to vCenter running on Windows and therefore using IIS.

Unable to Increase Thin Provisioned Disk Size

Hello! I'm trying to increase the size of the disk size of our VM. It's a 40GB, thin provisioned, but the "Maximum Size (GB)" part is grayed out (see attached).

Shutting down the VM doesn't allow me to change the size, and the Disk File ends in "-000001.vmdk". Forgive my ignorance, but does that mean it's running via a Snapshot? If so, it's apparently be running in a snapshot for a long time, and I'm worried that consolidating or deleting the snapshot will undo all changes that had happened since however long ago (over a year perhaps).

How do I mask out VME on AMD Ryzen 7 1700 for Windows 16-bit/32-bit hybrid VMs (Windows 98)?

$

Since my last discussion last month I've conducted some research regarding Ryzen and 16-bit/32-bit VMs, and apparently there seems to be a bug involving VME (Virtual-8086 Mode Enhancements). The INT instruction apparently misbehaves in V86 mode with VME enabled. More details are explained in the article below.

VME Broken on AMD Ryzen | OS/2 Museum

So then I realized, even though it is never mentioned, that not only Windows 98 (which is what I'm having problems installing) is effected but possibly any 16-bit (DOS/Windows 3.1) or 16-bit/32-bit hybrid (Windows 9x) operating system is effected (the article may state that 32-biy OS's are effected but I do have a Windows XP VM myself, it installed fine and it runs fine on Ryzen). The article states that people are having problems running 16-bit applications in DOS boxes in Windows VMs, especially in Windows XP (but I don't intend on running any 16-bit applications on my Windows XP VM).

So the article states the workaround is masking VME, but I would like to know what the precise string is to paste into the VM config file to test on the Windows 98 VM to see if masking out VME fixes my installation problem just so I know I'm posting the string of code correctly because I've mentioned before I have limited knowledge in CPUs. Thanks.

Launch a Workflow on event via vRA 7.2

Hi all,

We use the event brocker service to call vRO workflow for provisionning VM (with different lifeCycleState)

When a customer request a new hard drive on his VM, he uses the GUI in vRA and "reconfigure VM" to add disk... It works fine.

BUT... The guestOS need to be updated with the new drive, and for this, i would like to launch a Remote Powershell Script to add or extend drive.

SO... I need to catch the event. To achieve this, i read all of the Life Cycle Extensibility.PDF to look for reconfigure event

I found this :

ReconfigureVM.Complete in the global event

But i dont know how to provide these information in the event subscription.

Can anyone help me ?
