Refit Operation Fails after 7.4 Upgrade

$

We recently upgraded to 7.4 and we have about a dozen pools.

We started seeing that several VM's are in error state.   The pools are set to refresh on log out and some of these pools will no longer refresh.

After the user logs out we get this event:

Refit operation refresh failed

And the VM has an error state of:

Invalid powerstate: The attempted operation cannot be performed in the current state (Powered off).

If you power up the VM via vCenter it powers up just fine and seems to work complete the refresh without error.

Digging through the composer logs does not give any additional error beyond the invalid powerstate.

The only KB I could find was not relevant as i checked the DB and did not have multiple entries: VMware Knowledge Base

Even if I do a full recompose of the pool (using the existing snapshot), the recompose works fine but refreshes still after log off.

SSL/TLS remediation (ESXi 6.0, vCenter, vSphere Client)

Posting here, since piecing it together was a pain in the neck...

I've been assigned the task of eliminating SSLv3 & TLS 1.0 on servers in my environment, including ESXi & vCenter. Qualys scans revealed vulnerabilities related to SSLv3 on our ESXi hosts and vCenter server.

vCenter vulnerabilities, summarized. Despite using Nartac Crypto tool to disable SSLv3 and TLSv1 (and rebooting), Qualys still reported the following results...

3  SSL/TLS Server supports TLSv1.0  port 443/tcp over SSL  (QID 38628)

3  SSL/TLS Server supports TLSv1.0  port 8084/tcp over SSL  (QID 38628)

3  SSL/TLS Server supports TLSv1.0  port 9087/tcp over SSL  (QID 38628)

3  SSL/TLS Server supports TLSv1.0  port 9443/tcp over SSL  (QID 38628)

3  SSL/TLS Server supports TLSv1.0  port 11712/tcp over SSL  (QID 38628)

3 SSL/TLS Server supports TLSv1.0  port 636/tcp over SSL  (QID 38628)

3  SSL/TLS Server supports TLSv1.0  port 1514/tcp over SSL (QID 38628)

ESXi vulnerabilities, summarized

3  SSL/TLS Server supports TLSv1.0  port 443/tcp over SSL (QID 38628)

3  SSL/TLS Server supports TLSv1.0  port 5989/tcp over SSL (QID 38628)

After making the changes on ESXi hosts and vCenter, I couldn't connect the vSphere client to vCenter, and had to dig up the bit for Step 3. I did not find this information consolidated anywhere, and needed to grind through each step, rescanning with Qualys every step of the way. It may all be in one location somewhere already, but if not, here you go...

Required steps

  1. ESXi HOST remediation (https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2151279)
    1. Edit
[HOST]/etc/sfcb/sfcb.cfg to add the following lines
      • enableSSLv3:        false
      • enableTLSv1:        false
      • enableTLSv1_1:   false
      • enableTLSv1_2:   true
    2. Issue the
following command to restart the service and initialize the new TLS config
      • /etc/init.d/sfcbd-watchdog restart
  2. vCenter Server remediation (https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/6.5/com.vmware.vsphere.security.doc/GUID-145A078D-2F33-4B39-987C-0F2C91BB23CB.html)
    1. Download &
      install the TLS Reconfigurator
    2. Browse to the
      following location
      • C:\Program
        Files\VMware\CIS\vSphereTlsReconfigurator\VcTlsReconfigurator
    3. Issue the
      following command to disable SSLv3, TLSv1 & TLSv1.1
      • reconfigurevc.bat update -p TLSv1.2
  3. vSphere client update to enable TLSv1.2 connections (https://kb.vmware.com/s/article/2149000)
    1. Browse to the
      following location
      • C:\Program Files (x86)\VMware\Infrastructure\Virtual
        Infrastructure Client\Launcher
    2. Edit VpxClient.exe.config
      as follows
      • From: <add key = “EnableTLS12” value = “false” />
      • To: <add key = “EnableTLS12” value = “true” />

HCIBench best practices

Hey all,

Would anyone be able to share some HCIBench performance best practices? I am new to VMWare world and started using HCIBench recently but getting such crappy performance

I am trying to figure out the best ratio of VMs to VMDKs and the sizes, queue depths, etc. I have 1 large datastore (8TB) that I am testing against and I have tried from 4 to 32 VMs on it, with equal or half the amount of VMDKs and was playing with queue depths, from 32 to 8.

When I say crappy I mean, I had latencies over 200ms on average, to best case 1.5ms. But I think it can do better than that Would anyone have any recommendations for this? Any links or documentation you have for me to do some reading? And here I am only trying to get the best performance, so please disregard any rules regarding  maintenance and all that.

vSAN PSOD - emulex NIC ?

Hi,

I am reaching out to you guy because I haven't seen any progress with the vmware support investigation. We have the following environment:

        - vSAN ready nodes: DL360 gen9

          - Emulex HP FlexFabric 10Gb 2-port 556FLR-SFP+ Adapter

Repeating issue: PSOD with the message: Unrecoverable error in elxnet atpartners/samples/elxnet/elxnet_main.c:elxnet_getRxPfragInfo - 2668

Support suggested driver and firmware upgrade, we did it. Update from esxi 6 U2 to U3, we did it. But still it happens. They haven't seen it before, don't know the root cause. HPE hasn't seen it before, they don't know either.

This happens in different locations, Data center in different towns, Europe and US. What is common: vSAN 6.2, ESXi 6 U2 and U3, the same vSAN ready nodes and the same NIC cards.

Has anyone has or heard about something similar?

Thanks,

How to perform physical vCenter server dualization?

Dear all,

Basically I want to dualize 2 vCenters so they can work as backup for each other.

Each vCenter is installed on separate machine and I want to connect them to work as back up for each other.

Is this a possible scenario and if can, kindly let me know how to do the task.

Thank you in advance,

vRA 6.2.5 with vSphere/vCenter 6.5 (U1)

We currently have a complex environement with many components that we need to upgrade.

Like vSphere 5.5, vRA 6.2, vRO 6.0.3, NSX 6.2.4, and many other components either from VMware or third party.

For most reasons, we want to go to vSphere vCenter 6.5 U1.

Due to a lot of compexity inside vRA and vRO, we are unable to oversee an upgrade from 6.x to 7.x at the same time.

(going through all the changes inside vRA and the vRO workflows, with all external systems, would take a couple of more months)

In the compatibility matrix we see that vRA 6.2.5 is compatible with vCenter 6.5, but it's not listed to be compatible with 6.5 U1.

On the other hand we cannot find vRA 6.2.5 to be incompatible with vCenter 6.5 U1.

Does anyone have any experience with vRA 6.2.5 and vCenter 6.5 U1?

Hello,

I am on Vmware 5.5.

I have a virtual machine (windows 2008R2) with a virtual disk that has 2 partitions C: and D :

My C: partition has become too small so I want the partitions to be on 2 separate virtual disks to increase the size.

Precision on my partition D: there are links with the C: (database with the C: they are not just data

I did not find a solution even with Vmware converter.

Thank you for your help.

vMotion - what happens at sudden host crash

$

Hello there,

it would be great if you could help me understand how vMotion works on a sudden host crash.

I know that the cluster functionality mounts the vmdk file on another host and runs the VM.

But what happens to the VM itself? Does it crash too and is simply restarted on another host?

To my knowledge the RAM of the VM is run in the RAM of the host, wo I would assume that is all lost on a host crash?

Thanks for any help understanding this,

Best regards, Marcus

Does anyone know if it's normal for VSAN: Initializing SSD: to take a very long time?  It takes at least 10 minutes when the host is rebooted to get through this step.

vCloud Director 9.1 - Tenant Portal displaying "No Datacenters are available"

Hello,

I have just upgraded a lab from vCloud Director 9.0.0.2 to vCloud Director 9.0 and have an issue with the tenant portal not loading correctly and displaying "No Datacenters are available". This is affecting all Orgs. I have had a quick look with Fiddler and I can see the API calls to /api/query?type=orgVdc and can see the XML responses with the OrgVDC data however the UI just displays "No Datacenters are available".

Is anyone aware of a solution to this issue ?

bios.bootDelay setting being ignored.

Greetings. I’m using Workstation 14 Player and running into the famous Intel VT-X issue described in this link. However, the option to boot into BIOS is too fast for me. As such, I’ve
attempted the technique in this link in an effort to give me more time to get into the BIOS. Unfortunately, this setting is being ignored, and the original issue appears just as fast.

Where can I go from here?
