Upgraded from 7.0.1 to 7.3.1, getting "You cannot access your applications or desktops"... error

Hello:

We just did an in place upgrade from Horizon 7.0.1 to 7.3.1.  The upgrade steps went fine but now the HTML client is no longer working when connecting to any of our desktops.  We can authenticate, but just after authentication we are getting the error "You cannot access your applications or desktops from the web client.".  No desktop pools are presented like they used to.   I have verified HTML access is still enabled for the pools, as it was enabled before and was working before the upgrade.

Is this an issue with 7.3.1 or is anybody else having this issue?  Thanks.....

BUG REPORT: ESXi 6.5 web ui generates Unhandled Exception

I wasn't able to open a support ticket so I guess I will open this over here. I am getting an Unhandled Exception from the ESXi web ui. It happens whenever I try to edit the details of a VM. The guest details don't load properly. I'm seeing a lot of blanks and grayed out dropdowns where there used to be hardware options. If I try to fix the settings and click save I see:

Unfortunately, we hit an error that we weren't expecting.

The client may continue working, but at this point, we recommend refreshing your browser and submitting a bug report.

Press the Esc key to hide this dialog and continue without refreshing.

The details button gives me this:

VMware Player 14 Not loading Virtual Machine Even After Confirming It Was Installed

$

I have 64 bit VMware® Workstation 14 Player version 14.0.0 build-6661328 installed on Linux Mint 18.3 x64. My laptop is a Lenovo Ideapad z510 and I've made sure the virtual machine option in BIOS is enabled. The installation of VMware Player 14 on Mint was successful and VMware Player also opens without issues.

Whenever I choose "Create a New Virtual Machine", it lets me go thru all the appropriate steps. It allows me to pick an ISO and goes thru the full installation process without issues. VMware Player confirms that the virtual machine was installed successful and the virtual machine even boots fine after it's done with the initial installation.

However, the minute I shutdown the virtual machine, I can no longer open it again. It's not listed in the Home panel either. I've tried using the "Open a Virtual Machine" option, but nothing happens when I choose the vmx file.

I get the same symptom when using the ISO file of Kali Linux (kali-linux-2017.3-amd64.iso) and when using the virtual machine version of Kali Linux (kali-linux-2017.3-vm-amd64.ova)

Attached is a screen shot of the files found in the vmware folder (I believe these are for kali-linux-2017.3-vm-amd64.ova) . I've also included a screen shot of the empty Home panel.

Can someone please help? Don't understand why this is happening if all signs confirmed the virtual machine was installed. Selection_001.pngSelection_002.png

Dedicated Instant Clone pool question

$

Hi,

We're currently on View 7.2 and are looking to upgrade to 7.3.3 in the near future. There's been interest in getting to this version sooner since it'll support dedicated instant clone pools. I'm trying to understand if utilizing a dedicated Instant Clone pool will utilize any more or any less resources than a floating pool. Per the link below, it says that when a user logs off, a resync operation on the master image retains the VM name.... etc. Where as in the floating pool, it specifies that it's deleted and a new one is created. If someone has any experience with this and could answer a couple general questions it'll be a huge help, since I'm a bit unclear on the explanation below.

1. What happens to the machine after the user logs off? Does the machine get deleted and recreated from the master, but it's still assigned to that user?

     - If the machines don't get deleted, will it retain all of the data specific to the user? Just like a persistent machine?

2. Will these machines always be powered on, or only powered on when that user logs in?

Instant-Clone Desktop Pools

  • For dedicated instant-clone desktop pools, users are assigned a particular remote desktop and return to the same desktop at each login. When a user logs out, a resync operation on the master image retains the VM name and the Mac IP address of the VM after logoff.
  • For floating instant-clone desktop pools, users are assigned random desktops from the pool. When a user logs out, the desktop VM is deleted. New clones are created according to the provisioning policy, which can be on-demand or up-front

Thanks very much,

Mike

NSX SSL VPN PLUS for mobile (Android / iOS)

Hello,

i can't seem to find any information about a SSL VPN-PLUS client for mobile devices.

After so many years of existence of the product i can only imagine that this is intended from Vmware so i'm not really waiting for any changes on that side.

How do you guys manage mobile access ? The only solutions i have thought about seem clunky to me because of the need to manage 2+ SSL VPN termination on the server side. (i would really like to use NSX for non Android / iOS devices)

- Open VPN type VM published with 2 NIC (WAN / LAN)

- Windows RRAS based on L2TP

- .. other ?

Paste Login Password into Guest OS from Host

$

Hi,

Is there a way that I could copy/paste a password from a KeePass db on the host OS to the login screen of a guest OS? Right now, it doesn't work. Workstation 12, vmware tools are installed, guest isolation allows for copy/paste between the two. Both OS's are Windows 10 Enterprise 1607. The reason is because the password is very long and complex, too much so for typing.

Thanks

Unable to run New-VM after changing to vcenter 6.5

$

Hi All,

I recently set up a cluster system in vcenter 6.5. Previously I was running 6.0, with a bunch of powercli scripting to create/manage/delete vms. Everything had been running fine up until trying to execute on 6.5

I'm currently running PowerCLI 6.5, Powershell 5, and the correct .net and others required for powershell. Here is what I'm getting:

C:\Path\To\Somewhere> new-vm -Name test -VMHost $vmhost

new-vm : 12/20/2017 3:43:09 PM  New-VM          Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

At line:1 char:1

+ new-vm -Name test-vm -VMHost $vmhost

+ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    + CategoryInfo          : NotSpecified: (:) [New-VM], VimException

    + FullyQualifiedErrorId : Core_BaseCmdlet_UnknownError,VMware.VimAutomation.ViCore.Cmdlets.Commands.NewVM

Note, $vmhost is the object got by Get-VMHost myhostname, I've the following variations as well:

new-vm -Name test-andy -VMHost $vmhost.name

new-vm -Name test-andy -VMHost myvmhost_string

new-vm -Name test-andy -VMHost (Get-VMHost myhostname)

Also, the getting that vmhost works just fine.

Am I missing something here? Previously I just passed the esx name as a string with no issues. As well, I've tried to use -ResourcePool, using a valid pool that is returned from Get-ResourcePool, same error result as above.

Thanks for any help in advance.

URGENT & IMPORTANT: CPU disabled after inadvertent OS upgrade

$

VMware Fusion 6.x - CPU has been disabled by guest after attempting to upgrade the virtual OS to High Sierra (which I just learned is not supported by this older version of VMware Fusion).

Unfortunately, I had a Filemaker database server running on the virtual machine, with 2 databases running on it, and it turns out only 1 of the databases was included in the back-up scheme. I urgently need to find out if there is any way I can access the files stored on the virtual machine from the host machine (Mac OS 10.7).

I am completely at a loss: this setup was conceived by my brother-in-law, who was my IT go-to-guy and a very highly regarded IT security professional. However, he passed away last year after a motorcycle accident and I have not yet found a new trustworthy IT support person/company who know their way around both Mac and Windows, hence my request here. I am self-employed and do not have huge budgets backing me up.

Edit: of course if anyone knows how I can get the VM up and running again (is there a way to do a roll-back to the older version of my OS on the VM?), that would be even better, but I'm not getting my hopes up as yet...

Unacceptably slow shared folders performance

$
0
0

I have a MacBook Pro 15" late-2013 with a 512 GB SSD, 16 GB RAM and a Core i7 2.6 GHz CPU, running VMware Fusion 8. The host OS is OS X 10.10.5 (Yosemite) and the guest OS is Windows 10. My main use case for the VM is software development, and I have Microsoft Visual Studio 2015 installed on it, on which I use a plugin called VisualGDB (www.visualgdb.com), and there is a severe performance issue with my setup, which is severely dragging down my productivity. Here I should mention this is definitely not an issue with VisualGDB itself, and would most likely happen just the same with ordinary Visual Studio projects, it's just that I don't code in C# or VB to test a project in one of those languages.

Using VMware's built in sharing facilities, I shared my home folder from the host OS to the guest OS. I keep all my software projects in my host OS's home folder, and I access it from within Visual Studio using the shared folder.

The issue is this: performing a rebuild (Build menu -> Rebuild Solution in Visual Studio) of one of my projects over the shared folder takes 38 seconds (in another test, this took as long as 48 seconds; of which 15 seconds are spent just cleaning the project folder, which consists solely of deleting a number of files that's not more than a hundred). Now if I copy the project folder somewhere inside the Windows C: drive and perform the same rebuild when opening the project from there, it takes less than 7 seconds. The funny thing is that copying the project from my shared folder to the Windows C: drive takes about a second or two, I can't even time it accurately -- so why should accessing the same files from within VS be so slow? This is a 5.5x difference and is making me lose something in the vicinity of one hour every day waiting for compiles to finish. Even creating a network share from within Mac OS X (System Preferences -> Sharing -> File Sharing) is much faster than this at about 12 seconds; this is my preferred solution for now, but frankly I don't see just deleting less than a hundred .o files and reading in another hundred .c files should take an extra 6 seconds just because the file is on a shared folder (which is, of course, accessed over a loopback connection, so that no bytes are ever put on a physical wire, and the latency can probably be measured in microseconds).

Please note that, for various reasons related to my split Windows-Mac workflow, just copying the files to the C: drive instead of accessing them via the shared folder is not an acceptable solution. They must be kept in the shared folder at all times.

Are there any settings changes, or in general anything that I can do to speed up I/O operations on shared folders?

Xaas BP request template fails via postman API

We have imported a Xaas BP into vRA and its package into vRO. It is just a customized form with T-shirt size VM provisioning workflow. When we submit the catalog item from vRA portal it works seamlessly but when we get the https://vRAHOSTNAME/catalog-service/api/consumer/entitledCatalogItems/759788c4-bcfa-43d8-808b-3fa122fcbbf4/requests/templatetemplate using postman API it fails with below error

When I checked the vRA log the reason for failure is as below , we have manually created the Xaas BP instead of importing into vRA but still the same error appears in vRA logs. I am unsure what is service type ID in our Xaas BP. Please advice.
