Unable to create virtual machines in new datastore--frustrated beyond belief! :/

Hey all,

I am about to tear out the rest of my hair. I am hoping someone here has seen this behavior and can point me to a solution. I simply have tried everything I can think of, an nothing is making sense.

Summary: I have a Samsung 840 SSD, good for about 700GB, installed along with other SSDs in a box running ESXi 6.7

When I try to create a new VMFS6 datastore on this SSD, the process goes without issue. I have tried this under regular ESXi 6.7 UI, under ssh using command-line tools, and under vCenter 6.7 -- regardless, creating the datastore works just fine, as expected.

However, creating a new VM using that DS, or migrating an existing VM to that new DS, fails. EVERY TIME. The errors vary, they never seem to be the same, but it is always a combination of:

  • Unable to load configuration file '/vmfs/volumes/5ea9ef7c-23eb5578-3738-000af7a1d9e1/VM1/VM1.vmx'
  • An error occurred while creating a temporary dictionary file: Error.
  • Failed - The file is too large

No matter what though, the VM fails to be created/migrated. Google and other searches have yielded no help for this problem.

Of note: I can browse the new datastore, and upload files. I can create folders. I can ssh to the host and create files. I can create a text file using the text editor vi and read the file using cat. I can delete the files. In other words, the datastore seems to be perfectly happy. It just won't take virtual machines!

When I have tried creating the DS under command line, I have used partedUtil to create the partition (starting at sector 2048 as recommended for VMFS6) and then vmkfstools for creating the VMFS store. Currently, the SSD has a GPT format. I have tried taking the SSD into a Linux machine and clearing out all partitions there, and trying again under ESXi. Same result: the datastore is created but VMs can't be written to it. I have tried leaving a little space at the front of the partition and some space at the end of the partition. I did this because examining the other SSD's partitions, they seemed to have some free space before and after. I figured I would try that. No dice.

I truly am baffled. I don't know what could possibly be wrong with this datastore in terms on creating VMs or VMs being migrated to it, but being totally fine for writing files and directories directly or using the Browsing UI.

Here is a quick movie I made which shows the failed process, and you can also see I am displaying the info for the device in ESXi under ssh.

I am also attaching an image with the same information being shown in the ssh console.

If you would like any more details, I can provide them. If anyone can help, I will be forever grateful.

Virtual Machine - CPU Type and Speed

$

Hi,

There is a request to find out the CPU Type and Speed of VM.

For Cluster 1

I have checked and the CPU Type (EVC Mode)  is "Intel "Haswell" Generation" and no speed is specified.

Can I tell my supervisor that CPU is "Intel 'Haswell'  Generation" ?

I find that the CPU of 2 hosts are - Intel Xeon CPU E5-2670 v3 @ 2.3GHz

For Cluster 2

I find that there is no CPU for EVC Mode.  Can I use the CPU of the Host - Intel Xeon Sliver 4114 CPU @ 2.2GHz ?

Thanks

How do i disable the WAN interface from responding to pings from the outside.

Can only install VM using optical media

I'm just learning about servers and VM's and such. I am in a home environment so I do not have any Windows servers or NSF File Servers.

The only way I have been able to find to spin up a VM is by using a +R optical disc. CD's work but -R DVD's do not. That could be just the drive, I'm not sure.

Even plugging in a USB device is not even recognized. I cannot add that device as a datastore and then use it to boot the VM.

"You are running DellEMC Customized Image ESXi 6.0 Update 3 A15 (based on ESXi VMKernel Release Build 13635687"

This is the version of ESXi that I am running.

Should I run something different? I'd like to be able to spin up VM's more quickly and easily than having to burn a +R disc.

Thanks in advance.

We used VM OSOT tool to optimize our gold images and for some reason, i could not launch MS Teams after deploying to client pool. It will execute and close right away in Task manager. And, I installed as a MSI option. Does anyone know how to fix this issue? Thanks.

VRA 8.1 - Placement policies based on username and tags

Running version 8.1

I've been trying to find a way to customize my blueprint so it pulls the username (without the @domain.com suffix) and uses constraint tags to place the VM on the right network, in the right resource pool, and in the right folder.  All of these items have tags that match a username in AD that was all created with a script.  If I manually enter the username as the constraint tag, it works great.  I need it to happen dynamically though.

I was using the ${env.requestedBy}' variable, but it adds the @domain.com to the username.  It's not a huge deal, but the VM folder matches the username, and not the entire name with @domain.com.

Also, the VM folder is a sub folder (Lab VMs\Username) and it doesn't seem to like to mix a variable with a folder structure.  It ends up creating a folder like "Lab VMS%5Username" or something.   I may just be messing up the syntax on that last line when I try and add "Lab VMs\ before the variable.

I wish there was a way to place the VM in a folder based on tags like resource pools...  Maybe this can be accomplished with a extensibility action and a powershell script?

Also, is there a way to make YAML not case sensitive when looking at tags? lol

ESXI 6.7 Removing Datastore: Setting Scratch location back to non-persistence

$

Having problems removing a datastore and noticed the vSphere client does not let me set advanced settings such as:

ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation
ScratchConfig.CurrentScratchLocation

to

[] /scratch/log/.locker

Any ideas on the solution? I suspect the issue is with vSphere and having to directly go the esxi portal or shell in.

Update

shelled in:

mkdir -p /tmp/scratch

On vSphere I changed the advanced setting ScratchConfig.ConfiguredScratchLocation to /tmp/scratch but anytime I try to set ScratchConfig.CurrentScratchLocation to /tmp/scratch or /tmp/scratch/.locker I get an error message.

I briefly went through VMware Knowledge Base and it mentioned a restart was needed for that setting to be changed so I restarted. But when I went back to the hosts advanced settings those settings were reset back to the original datastore?

Hi there,

we have the situation that when connected from Windows to a Linux VDI,

and within that VDI session we need the ShortCut Ctrl-ALT,

but this Hot-Key-combination is intercepted by the Horizon Windows Client.

Is there any possibility to disable the HotKey (ctrl-alt) on the windows side so that it´s not intercepted anymore?

thanks,

Reinhard.

Hello experts,

Coming back to my new query explained as below:

> Can we perform the Vmotion with route-based or policy based VPN setup without HLM enabled?

> L2 VPN is basically stretched my existing network so during Vmotion IP settings of VM will no get changed on VMC, correct? Do we still require HLM in L2 VPN setup?

> In all the Vmotion migrations explained above, do we require a shared storage?

> I have one single SDDC ( VMC on AWS) and multiple physical sites in different locations. Can my Single SDDC connect to multiple physical sites in different locations and then perform Vmotion migrations?

Generic questions about Edge Nodes

Hello Experts,

I have following queries about the NSX-T edge nodes:

  • Considering NSX-T can support large number of Edge Nodes (320 in NSX-T 2.5) ; Do all the edge node clusters have to be connected same router
  • Is it possible to deploy two different edge clusters - one providing NAT service to set of transport nodes and the other providing DHCP to separate set of transport nodes?
  • When you create multiple tier-0 routers on the edge node, do the transport nodes get multiple instances too or just one?

Cheers

Team,

On premise Airwatch guys!

WE are on premise (Version 19.07) and our servers often fail with lots of performance RAM/CPU issues. WE have 50k devices enrolled (4 DS and 2 console server)

We are having to reboot our VM's daily and do frustrating IIS resets.

Queries below:

Is there a tool which sends out sms or email notifications if there are performance issue seen?

Also, when the private Que goes over a certain limit, can we automatically trigger a reboot?

Kindly advise,

Force VmWare to only connect to VPN

$

If my VPN loses connection I need to ensure my local IP is not leaked.

Setup:

-Win 7 VmWare [Network Adapter: Bridged]

-VPN using SoftEther

-VPNCheck Pro (killswitch)

VPNCheck Pro closes my browser (Firefox) when my VPN goes down to prevent IP leakage.

However, I require a kill switch which will immediately stop ALL network traffic, not just close Firefox, OR just have all traffic forced to only travel through the VPN.

Any suggestions?

Upgrade vROPS 6.7.0 to 8.0

Hello,

We currently have vRealize Operation Manager 6.7.0.8183617 running in a 2 node cluster setup. We are wondering if it is possible to upgrade to 8.0 without loosing the already collected data. We know this was the case from version 6.0 to 6.7. Or should we setup 2 new servers? Thanks for the feedback.

I already ran vRealize Operations Manager Pre-Upgrade to 8.0.1 Assessment Tool which looks "sort of" promising.

Validating product version

Make sure to run vRealize Operations Manager - 6.6.1, 6.7, 7.0 and 7.5 Virtual Appliance upgrade, as product version is 6.7.0 Ensure product and upgrade versions meet the requirements.

Validating there are no Active Self Monitoring Alerts existing on the cluster.
2 ACTIVE alerts, ALERT_DEFINITION: 1. vRealize Operations Cluster processes may not have enough memory 2. Error synchronizing user privilege information with VMware Virtual Center
