vCenter 6.5 Appliance - replace VMCA Root Cert with Custom Signing and replace all Certs - Failure @85%

Hey folks, can't find much on this error after scouring the web and many blogs. Basically the Certificate replacement process (Option #2) looks like it's completing successfully then hangs at 85% during  the " Starting Services" phase, which then gives a message about services failing to start  due to a timeout and proceeds to roll back this process however also fails and I'm left with a semi-bricked appliance unless I restart.

Here's what I'm doing:

I have a small lab on VMware Workstation 12 running ESXi 6.5d and vCenter appliance 6.5d (I've also tried A, B patches to see if this is a new bug introduced in version D) along with Horizon View 7.  I want to have the vCenter appliance act as a "Subordinate CA", replace the root cert with the appliance using a Certificate generated by my CA server, and Automate the replacement of all Certificates, including ESXi hosts done by VMCA with Signed CA certs. I have a single tier PKI using SHA 384 and 4096 bit key.

I've spent several days/nights looking over many articles and videos and I don't appear to be missing any Critical step with the setup of my Certificate Template for vSphere 6.0 VMCA, configuration of my CA, or the Certificate Signing process itself, but something is wrong somewhere.

What I've done so far. vSphere 6.0 Environment with Custom Certificates (External PSC) - YouTube

1. I've installed a Server 2012 R2 Root CA in Enterprise mode with Certificate Web services and have created the template per guidance of this article and this video.

2. I've patched the vCenter to the latest build which is Version D Build #

3. I've duplicated the Subordinate CA Certificate template and have customized it per VMware guidance

4. I'm using VMCA Cert Tool to generate the CSR

5. I am able to successfully generate a certificate based on this CSR

6. I'm able to upload the cert chain and key file provided by the vCenter appliance into the cert-tool during the process for Option # 2 from the main menu

7. the Process executes and looks to be updating and replacing all of the certs using the Certificate i've generated for VMCA

8. the process fails @ 85% when attempting to start the services again

9. I've exhausted most of my troubleshooting and knowledge in this area

However, I'm running into this weird error when attempting to run through the process. As described in this Article.

Replacing a vSphere 6.x Machine SSL certificate with a Custom Certificate Authority Signed Certificate (2112277) | VMwar…

As soon as I get to 85% starting services, it hangs for several minutes and then errors out and rolls back everything. Upon examining the logs, I can find no clear indication of what is failing outside of services not starting, which does not make sense is the fact that the  certificate replacement was successful per the logs, why would a failure to start these services cause the entire process to roll back?

The thing that boggles me is that I can confirm this in the /storage/log/vmware/vmcad/certificate-manager.log, I receiving messages that would lead one to believe that the certificates were successfully replaced along the way.

Sluggish display performance in published app

Hi all,

I have an interesting issue with Horizon 6 published apps. Have 2 RDS hosts with MS Project installed. No issues with publishing it through Horizon. But some users experience a drag in the mouse specially when they hover over the menu within MS Project. Moving the mouse leaves a trail of the mouse icon and it takes a while for it to catch up to the pointer. And this is only for some users (unfortunately the users who need the app the most). I don't have that when I open the app. I have even RDP'ed into one of the RDS hosts and opened Project and don't see any issues. Tested with just one active RDS host in case it was isolated to a single RDS host. Moved the RDS hosts to different storage (SSDs). Built new RDS hosts, issue persists (again for some users only).

Any ideas?

Enhanced authentication plugin not working

Hi all - have VCSA 6.5 installed in two locations now.  Enhanced authentication plugin is installed but not working - cannot check the box for credential fill-in.  Tried a few different things to no avail.  Anyone have it working or know why it may not be working in Chrome or IE in Windows 10?

Thanks all!

vCD 5.1 cannot deply Edge. Unrecognized vShield Manager response

Hi Folks,

Hoping somebody can help. My Environment is a follows

vCD 5.1

vCenter 5.1

vSM  5.1.2

Up until yesterday everything worked just fine. vCloud users could create vApps, add VM,s Create vApp networks, join the vApp network to an external network and configure NAT, all within vCD. vCD(service account) would then create the portgrups in vCenter, vSM then deployed the EDGE in vCenter, all worked perfectly. Now for some reason vShiled Manager is unable to deploy the edge. vCD throws up these error messages when trying to deplay the Edge:

Unable to deploy network "Training-vSheild(urn:uuid:3cea8772-3c16-48a9-9ced-bfb1e9ba538a)".

org.springframework.web.client.RestClientException: Unrecognized vShield Manager response. vShield Manager is unable to process the request or some other error occurred at vShield Manager, please check vShield Manager logs for details.

I cannot find more details specific to this in the vSM.

I have take a a look at the vCD logs and can see things like:

DELETE request for "https://10.207.131.68:443/api/2.0/xvs/switches/dvs-65/networks/dvportgroup-37283" resulted in 403 (Forbidden); invoking error handler

Error deploying vApp:

Unable to deploy network "Training-vSheild"

I can ping VSM from vCD so there is connectivity. VSM can see vCenter. Not sure whats broken here.

What are my options?

thanks folks.

Hi Guys.

I am running VCSA 6.5

I must be doing something wrong here.

I have created a share on a Windows server and no issues. I have setup a content library to this share and everything goes through fine. I have uploaded a 5GB ISO to this content library and from what i can see this uploads fine. However,

When I look in the Windows share it is empty. On a VM guest if i try to attach the ISO i see nothing listed. Any ideas what i might be doing wrong or have missed?

Thanks in advance

Rechts unten erscheint beim Hochfahren "Virtual Printing is globally disabled on ... und "Virtual device "serial0" will start disconnected." Die Virtuelle Maschine beginnt hochzufahren, endet aber dann beim Anzeigen eines Bindestriches. Wie kann ich das Problem lösen ?

Report based on number of vCPUs

I'm rather new to vR Ops and trying to build a monthly report based on basic T-Shirt sizing of virtual machines: xsmall, small, medium, large, xlarge, xxlarge, etc. Each size obviously has it own number of vCPUs and RAM. I just need a count of the average of each type deployed during the month. I've tried profiles, various views, etc... what's the best way for going about doing this? Any help is appreciated.

VMFS volume missing physical extents

Hi Folks, I'm getting error as below while trying to extend VMFS volume. I can see in properties that total LUN size and extents size doesn't tally.

Also I can see the extend in add datastore wizard. I tried reboot/rescan, nothing helps. I don't want to complicate it further as it contains VMs and data.

Also from cli I can see extent LUN is showing offline but PATHs are active.

Any help is very much appreciated.

Switch between Linux virtual consoles?

$

I know... asked a million times.  But the answers I'm finding aren't helping.

My host is a laptop running RHEL 7  I'm using Firefox, connecting to our vCenter Server 6.5  I've tried CTRL+ALT+SPACE, F[x] but that is changing the console of my host.

I've found a couple of long posts about issues with Flash and this browser or that browser or ??? but everything that doesn't say CTRL+ALT+SPACE is years old.

How do I switch between consoles?

vCenter Server Appliance (SLES) out of disk space, service cannot start

$

Hi everyone

We had a scheduled maintenance window over the weekend while some work was carried out elsewhere in the building. As a precaution we shutdown the infrastructure that we we still keep onsite (the rest is in colo). So all we have is a 2 node ESXi cluster, managed by vCenter Server Appliance (Novell SUSE Linux Enterprise 11 64bit). It only has 6 VMs running on it as most of them have been migrated offsite.

This morning we started up the OpenFiler NFS storage box and the ESXi nodes. All VMs started ok, including the vCenter Server Appliance.

However I was unable to connect to the vCenter Appliance using vSphere Client. I could connect to the ESXi nodes directly without problems. DNS hostnames all resolve to the IP addresses without problems.

Looking at the vSphere Client logs I see the following message each time I tried to connect:

System.Net.Sockets.SocketException: No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it 10.10.0.205:443

So I connected to the vCenter Appliance over SSH and it looks like it's run out of disk space. Here's the df and mount output:

vlevcenter01:/ # df -h

Filesystem            Size  Used Avail Use% Mounted on

/dev/sda3             9.8G  9.8G     0 100% /

devtmpfs              4.0G  104K  4.0G   1% /dev

tmpfs                 4.0G  4.0K  4.0G   1% /dev/shm

/dev/sda1             130M   18M  105M  15% /boot

/dev/sdb1              20G  3.8G   15G  21% /storage/core

/dev/sdb2              20G  717M   18G   4% /storage/log

/dev/sdb3              20G   19G     0 100% /storage/db

vlevcenter01:/ # mount -l

/dev/sda3 on / type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)

proc on /proc type proc (rw)

sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)

debugfs on /sys/kernel/debug type debugfs (rw)

devtmpfs on /dev type devtmpfs (rw,mode=0755)

tmpfs on /dev/shm type tmpfs (rw,mode=1777)

devpts on /dev/pts type devpts (rw,mode=0620,gid=5)

/dev/sda1 on /boot type ext3 (rw,acl,user_xattr)

/dev/sdb1 on /storage/core type ext3 (rw)

/dev/sdb2 on /storage/log type ext3 (rw)

/dev/sdb3 on /storage/db type ext3 (rw)

So the database and root partitions have run out of space. Looking in /var/log/localmesages:

Jul 15 10:10:51 vlevcenter01 startproc: startproc: Empty pid file /var/run/slapd/slapd.pid for /usr/lib/openldap/slapd
Jul 15 10:10:51 vlevcenter01 startproc: startproc:  exit status of parent of /usr/lib/openldap/slapd: 1
Jul 15 10:10:52 vlevcenter01 checkproc: checkproc: Empty pid file /var/run/slapd/slapd.pid for /usr/lib/openldap/slapd
It looks like it can't create the pid files for the services because there is no disk space.

We already have 60GB of vmdks allocated to this VM though we do have space on our datastore to add more. But I'm concerned that the vCenter Appliance will just grow and grow.

1) Is there any scheduled maintenance that runs on the vCenter Appliance to keep disk usage under control? This is what I would expect from an enterprise product, I'm very surprised to see such a problem happen.

2) Where should I start looking to clear some disk space so we can get the vCenter service back up and running?

I'd like to find a longer term solution to this otherwise we might have to just keep adding vmdks until our datastore runs out of space.

Cheers, B

Missing text in tabs and header sections after VCSA upgrade from 6.0 to 6.5

Hi All,

I have recently upgraded two of my 6.0 clusters to 6.5, both the VCSA and the ESXi hosts. One went fine and the other one, while it looks fine functionality-wise, I see throughout the flash GUI in various places missing text for various tabs and section headers. See the 2 pictures below.

The HTML5 UI looks fine, I see no problems there. It was looking fine in the 6.0 VCSA web client.

I have restarted the VCSA several times, no change. Any ideas what could be wrong and what I could do ?

Thanks,

Stefan

Changing the nic.backing.deviceName does not change the nic.deviceInfo.summary. Am I missing something?

I am working on a workflow to change the network assigned to a NIC device.  I have it working except I noticed that the deviceInfo.summary property was not updated when I changed the nic.backing.deviceName property.  I would have thought those would be linked in some way. Do I have to do anything special to change that property and are there any others that I will need to change like that?

Migrated 6.2 to 7.2 and vRO stub workflows don't work

Is there anything I'm missing that would cause my stub workflows not to work?  My endpoints are all configured.  I can browse my vRo server in XaaS and I can even call an event broker workflow.  The Event broker workflow failed since I don't have any workflows setup to use the new payloads yet.

Logs show this error:

Workflow Complete:  1017187 - Failed: Error executing vRealize Orchestrator workflow: TypeError: Cannot read property "hostId" from null (Workflow:Prepare Workflow run / Get host (item4)#1).

I'm not even seeing it hit my orchestrator server, there is no failure of the workflow.
