Workflow fails when called by vRA

Good afternoon,

 

I´m trying a specific workflow that starts with the following Orchestrator Action: getAllVMs (com.vmware.library.vc.vm). The result is saved within an Array/VC:VirtualMachine.

When I start the workflow manually, using the vR Orchestrator client, this action returns all vCenter virtual machines and saves them, correctly, within the array.

 

Then, I made vRA (vRealize Automation) call this particular workflow when a blueprint gets to the Provisioned Stage.

The workflow is correctly called but, for some reason, the getAllVMs action does not return any values, resulting in an empty Array (which sadly breaks the rest of the workflow).

 

I tried several times running it manually: it works.

I tried several times running it through vRA: it does not work.

 

I´m attaching some screenshots with information about the array and its corresponding values when the workflow is ran both manually and through vRA.

 

Could someone please help me out to discover why is this happening?

Update: I modified the workflow by adding a pause right after the action execution. The array value was, as expected, empty :-(

With the workflow frozen, I re-ran it, manually, pointing to the virtual machine recently created by vRA. And it works.

More and more I´m convinced that there´s some sort of issue with the way vRA calls the workflow, but I can´t figure it out yet what it is.

Moving View Personas

I am looking at moving a View Personas repository to a new server for a client.  Is there a best practice way of doing this?  I was looking at using Robocopy.

Disk Space is growing day by day in GBs of Drive D where VMware Update Manager Service is installed

vCenter Server 6.0  disk space is growing automatically on daily basis in GBs. On which disk, vCneter Update Manager is installed. Size of this particular Drive is 50 GB in which only 4 GB data is reside however its space has been consumed 43 GB.

 

When all space has been occupied of this Drive  ( Drive D) then vCenter Server Services goes stop. I have no idea where is the problem and could not find out the root cause. Secondly, other-than vCenter Update Manager Server Services, all vCenter Server 6.0 related services are installed on Drive C. 

 

Internet Services are enabled on vCenter Server but i have disabled the option on Update Manager configuration Tab for auto downloading VMware patches. Please help out.......

VCP 6 - new format and actual tips of the REAL EXAMS

Thatś right, you read correctly: now VCP 6 is composed of TWO exams, and you need to get a minimum score of 300 on each one.  Check here the requirements, proces and details  to do the test.

 

Two tests now. The 2V0-620 (vSphere 6 Foundations) is needed for any VCP 6 level certification  (DCV – Data Center Virtualization, Cloud, Desktop and NX – NSX and networking). If you are planning some certification besides DCV, you ony need to do this exam once. It have 65 questions, and is simmilar to the VCA test but with more technical questions, specifically about the new products of the vSphere 6 family (VSAN 6.x, vRealize, VVOLs) and new features  (Content Catalog, long distance vMotion, etc). There is a exam simulator (click here)that can be useful to understand the level of the questions present on the exam. Detailed information about the exam can be found in vSphere 6 Foundations Exam.

 

The 2V0-621 test, Data Center Virtualization, is more complex and have  85 questions. Is a good test as it require a good practical knowledge in VMware environments - you can't only make the vSphere ICM course. There is also a simulate test, which you can find it here.

 

Some tips about the exam content, as I have passed both BETA (few months ago) and also the actual exam yesterday:

 

  • A ot of questions about resource pools (shares and reservations). Check exactly what are the default values of the shares high, medium and low because some questions needs mathematical calculations over these values and don't provide them.
  • A lot of questions about permissions, some about COntent Libreries permissions. Check exactly what kind of permission each vCenter predefined role have. There are also questions about the ESXi integration with AD.
  • Some questions aboutVSAN, what happen if there is a failure, fault domaisn, and new features on version 6.1.
  • Check the new traffic types enabled on vmkernel interfaces and what each one does.
  • Some questions about VMware Converter, how to change/add disks during the conversion, advanced options, etc.
  • Know how to operate a VM from command line, using SSH or DCUI, and also how to use esxcli.
  • Know what are and how the native multipathing policies work (MRU, Fixed, RR).
  • Know PSC/SSO. A ot of questions were regarding Identity Sources, how to configure it and what types are.
  • There were no questions about maximuns, just indirect questions about it (i.e. is it possible to create a VM with 150 vCPUs?)

Some other tips:

  • Read the blueprint, now directly availabe on the links provided above. There are some questions that are referenced on the most hidden paces fro the blueprint content.
  • Some questions from the simulate tests are on the actual test, but slightly different (usually with different answers options).
  • Read all questions CAREFULLY, mostly if english is not your native language.

 

These tips were related to MY TEST, each one is different and there is a big number of possible questions. Your test may be different from mine.

Vmware 11+patch and pro 12 on Ubuntu 15.10 Does not start

I just upgraded my laptop to the latest beta of Kubuntu 15.10. When I try to start vmware it simply does nothing. No messages, no errors, no flashes, no nothing. I ran an strace against it and it was fairly short given that strace produces a lot of output and did not see anything out of the ordinary. I have added it to pastbin at : strace vmware 12 startup - Pastebin.com.

 

Kernel:  Linux paullap 4.2.0-12-generic #14-Ubuntu SMP Mon Sep 28 18:36:22 UTC 2015 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

 

I tried starting vmware 11 with the 4.2 patch and rebuilt modules and vmware 12 pro. Workstation and Player respond identically.

 

Any assistance would be much appreciated.

USB TV Tuner on Windows xp sp2 Vmware Image

Hi,

 

I am not sure if this topic goes in here but here goes...

 

I have a third party external usb tv tuner card made by a small company in India called Tech-com that works only on windows xp sp2 platform. I have been unsuccessful to get this to work on VISTA after numerous attempts with similar drivers.

 

So the next thing that I thought is to upgrade to vista on my laptop, use the free vmware util and run a winxpsp2 image and try and get the device to be picked up in the image.

 

Is this a plausible action and will it render any results?

1- when to choose Windows installation vs Ova installation.

2- do we need vApp in windows installation.

3- do we need vApp in Ova installation.

4- How to consider the environment (extra Samll, Samll, medium & large,.. that's based on what ?

Does Fusion 6 work with El Capitan as host OS?

I saw the thread about Fusion 7 and El Capitan, but I'm wondering about Fusion 6 and El Capitan.  I know that El Capitan works as a guest os with Yosemite as host, and the latest version of Fusion 6 (I am running the release version of El Capitan in a VM on my Yosemite-running iMac), but I have not actually upgraded any of my systems to El Capitan yet.

Installation of plug-in fails

This is my exact scenario (although I'm on 5.5U3): vCloud Air vSphere Client Plug-in 1.5 Documentation Center

 

But when it says to verify if the VM can reach svcgw.vmware.com with a simple ping, it can't. Neither can my home computer. Or any computer I've tested. Is there a way to manually install the plugin or do I simply just have to wait till svcgw.vmware.com comes back up?

vSphere/vCloud director sees vmware-tools version as 0000

Hello,

during our build process, we customize RHEL machine on KVM, and during this process also VMware Tools are installed. Then QCOW2 is also converted to OVA and this image is used on both VMware and KVM hypervisors.

 

Problem is with VMware tools, which work, however report version 0000. This is an issue when doing deployment to vCloud-based environment using tool, that requires higher version of VMware tools (which is actually there, but is badly reported)

I would like to ask, whether there is at least workaround how to fix VMware Tools version reporting, or whether support for proper installation on KVM is planned.

Hi all,

 

During a routine check of the logs of a VCSA (5.5u3), I noticed the following warning in the vpxd.log. It is appearing several hundreds time in the log.

 

[2010-09-29 23:17:00.591 F5804B90 warning 'Proxysvc Req00008'] Error reading from client while waiting for header: N7Vmacore15SystemExceptionE(Connection reset by peer)


Anyone familiar with this warning. Is it safe to ignore this warning?


It looks like we don't have any (visible) problem using the VCSA.

get-vmhoststorage rescan all hba on hosts at same time

Does anyone know how to rescan the HBAs on all hosts at the same time instead of waiting for each one to finish? In our recovery script, we currently have:

 

        Get-Cluster -Name $Cluster | Get-VMHost | Get-VMHostStorage -RescanAllHba -RescanVmfs | out-null

 

but this scans 1 VMHost at a time and then goes to the next  (which is very time consuming)

 

I've tried to use the Start-Job cmdlet in ps v2.0 but I'm having a difficult time understanding the best concept. It seems like I can start the job but then I need to "Receive-Job" before it actually sends the rescanallhba job to the VMHost. Then I have to write a loop to "Receive-Job" on all the jobs I dynamically created ... and then I'm back to square one ... one at at time instead of all at once.

Slow Graphic Performance in El Capitan Guest - VMWare Fusion 8.0.1

I am experiencing very sluggish graphic performance in my El Capitan guest. I am running the guest on El Capitan as well. I have included a video below which shows the sluggish performance. I have my graphics set 512mb and 3d acceleration is on as well with debugging set to none. I'm not really sure what else to try.

Help with a simple script to shut a bunch of VM's, it works but I need it to exit if there is no confirmation a VM shut down successfully.

I have cobbled together a automated shutdown script below which reads a text file and shuts a list of specific VM's down.  It sort of works however if in the event the script was unable able to gracefully shut a VM down (i.e VMtools was not running/installed) I need the script to provide a exit code and send an email alert.  I think I have found a bit of suitable code (highlighted in red below) which can achieve this however I'm not 100% about how to implement it.  I wondered if someone could kindly show me an example so I can try to learn from it.

High Network Latency while Cloning a VM

Hi,

We are having a strange issue in our environment. We have vSphere 5.5 in our environment.

When we are cloning a VM, our whole network becomes inaccessible & heavy RTOs occur at that time. What could be the possible reason for this problem ?

USB passthrough problem after Esxi 5.1 to Esxi 6.0b upgrade

Hi,

I recently upgraded my ESXi host from 5.1 version to 6.0.0.2809209 . Esxi 5.1 USB passthrough was working without problem . I was upgraded 5.1 to 6.0 when usb smartcard readers was connected . Now USB smartcard readers doesn't seem on ESXi 6.0b. 

I couldn't find any usb to attach in VM settings .
